Spelling Bee is a word game where you make as many words as you can from seven letters. The letters sit in a honeycomb with one letter in the middle. Every word must be at least four letters long and must include the center letter. That’s the whole game, and it takes about a minute to learn.

What is Spelling Bee?

Spelling Bee is a daily-style vocabulary puzzle made famous by the NYT Spelling Bee. You see seven letters: one yellow center letter and six around it. Your job is to find words using only those letters. The more words you find, and the longer they are, the higher your rank. On Spell Bee Solver you can play the daily puzzle or Spelling Bee Unlimited, which has no daily limit.

The rules of Spelling Bee

  1. Words must be at least 4 letters long. ARM doesn’t count; ARMY does.
  2. Every word must include the center letter.
  3. You can only use the seven letters in the hive.
  4. Letters can be reused. With A, L, T and the center letter I, both TILT and LILT are valid.
  5. No proper nouns, hyphenated words or abbreviations.
  6. The hive never contains the letter S, so plurals are out. Here’s why there’s no S in Spelling Bee.

How scoring works

Word Points
4 letters 1
5 letters or more 1 per letter
Pangram (uses all 7 letters) length + 7 bonus

Your rank rises as you score, from Beginner through Good, Solid, Nice, Great and Amazing to Genius (70% of the maximum). Find every word and you reach Queen Bee. Full details are in Spelling Bee scoring and ranks explained.

A worked example

Take this hive: center A, outer letters I, L, M, R, T, Y.

  • ARMY uses A, R, M, Y: 4 letters, so 1 point.
  • ALTAR reuses A: 5 letters, so 5 points.
  • MILITARY uses all seven letters, so it’s a pangram: 8 letters + 7 bonus = 15 points.
  • TRIM is not allowed: it doesn’t contain the center letter A.

Five tips for beginners

  • Start with short words. Pair the center letter with each outer letter and say the combinations out loud.
  • Add endings. -ED, -ING and -ER turn one word into several. See the prefix and suffix cheat sheet.
  • Look for the pangram early. It’s worth at least 14 points. Try these pangram methods.
  • Shuffle when stuck. A new layout shows patterns you missed.
  • Take breaks. Coming back with fresh eyes often finds two or three words straight away.
